Familiarity with various types of knee prostheses:
One of the most important factors in performing a proper and effective knee joint replacement is selecting the appropriate knee prosthesis. Below, you will become familiar with some of these prostheses and their applications.
In patients whose one half of the knee is damaged, partial or unicompatmental prostheses are used. In patients with mild bowlegged or knock-kneed deformities of the knee joint, primary prostheses are used. These prostheses have a simpler structure but remain in the knee for a longer period. These prostheses come in various types, such as cruciate retaining, Mobile bearing, and posterior stabilizer, which are selected for the patient at the surgeon’s discretion.
If the knee deformity is severe, more complex prostheses, known as constrained (constrain) prostheses, are used. This type of prosthesis is also used for severe ligament injuries that occurred in the past. Another application of complex prostheses is the treatment of ineffective collateral ligaments of the knee. In general, complex prostheses provide greater stability.
However, if these instabilities and deformities are very severe, such as in patients whose knees move backward, prostheses known as hinged prostheses are used.
Cost of knee prostheses:
Naturally, as the complexity of the knee prosthesis increases, its price also increases. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the type of prosthesis be determined through a thorough examination and precise imaging before surgery, so that if patients require more complex prostheses, they will be available during the operation and a positive surgical outcome can be achieved.
