🟣What is freezing or cryotherapy for cervical lesions?
🟣Freezing or cryotherapy for cervical lesions Cryotherapy, or freezing, is used to treat cervical lesions as well as lesions caused by cervical dysplasia and cervical carcinoma in situ, or CIN grades 1 and 2. During freezing, carbon dioxide gas is introduced to the outer part of the cervix through a device, and the freezing caused by the gas destroys the abnormal tissue. Freezing is performed on an outpatient basis at a gynecologist's office and is relatively painless. Side effects of freezing include vaginal discharge and/or spotting for 2 to 3 weeks. After freezing, avoiding intercourse for 3 weeks and using Triple Sulfa vaginal ointment or Betadine vaginal gel are recommended. Cryotherapy is not permitted during pregnancy. It should be noted that freezing, in very rare cases, particularly if the procedure is performed using sharp probes, may lead to cervical stenosis (cervical narrowing); therefore, consulting a skilled gynecologist to perform the procedure and avoiding the complication of infertility are recommended.
