When should you take seeking care more seriously?
Some signs should be assessed without delay; if symptoms are sudden or occur with an emergency condition, call 115.
- Sudden change in speech or language comprehension — After a stroke, or if accompanied by weakness of the face, arm, or leg, confusion, or impaired consciousness, call 115 immediately.
- Coughing or choking while eating or drinking — Especially after a stroke, prompt follow-up is needed to assess swallowing safety and coordinate with the care team.
- Persistent delay in a child's speech or communication — Late talking, limited language comprehension, difficulty forming sentences, or very unclear speech require an assessment appropriate to the child's development.
- Stuttering with distress or avoidance — Persistent stuttering or concern for the child and family makes early assessment and appropriate support valuable.
